Customer Rating: Summary: Great little product Comment: I have not used this for all of the things that others have mentioned (streaming HD content from computer, etc). My main purpose was to give a connection for my xbox 360 - and it has done that with a vengeance.
Connection was incredibly simple. I received two units - set one to "master", and plugged it in to the wall, and connected it to my router. Left the other unit on "terminal" setting, plugged it in to wall by the 360, and connected it to the 360. Worked instantly, no additional setup required.
I have a 10 MBPS cable connection at home, so I know downloads will be limited by that. Having said that, I downloaded a 28 MB trailer on my 360, and it polished it off in right around one minute (which is very close to the same performance I get from my computer connection). So I am very happy with speed and performance.
One little ding - it did not come with ethernet/patch cable, so I had to use my own. But it's so much cheaper than the others I looked at, I could have bought several extra cables & still come out ahead.
All in all, highly recommend (though, of course, as mentioned above, I'm not using it for all of the things some others are, so be sure to check out capability for what you are looking to do)...
Customer Rating: Summary: Easy to Test - Functions Poorly with Battery Backups (UPS) Comment: This product is very easy to test. Plug the two units into the wall outlets of your choice and then press a button on one unit. The quality of your connection will then be displayed. You don't need to connect the adaptors to anything in order to test them. What could be simplier!
These adaptors send a signal over your powerlines. Unfortunately that signal will be viewed as noise by some surge protectors and most UPS battery backups. The better your surge protector or battery backup --- the less likely these adaptors will work for you. That would also be true for other manufacturer's powerline adaptors. I could not get the Panasonics to work when I plugged one of these adaptors into an AC outlet near my computer when I had my battery backup connected. When I disconnected the battery backup, I then had a good connection. The battery backup very effectively removed the signal from the powerline.
A side note for experts: If you're electrically proficient you'll get better performance when these two adaptors share the same phase of your house wiring. While I know that very few users would have the know-how to make the simple changes required at their circuit breaker panel, I mention this only to the electricians/techs who may be reading this. Even in this case - the UPS/battery backup should be on the other phase. I also strongly suspect that the reviewer who said he got better performance when one adaptor was located near the circuit breaker panel was in fact attributing what he saw to the two adapters being on the same phase.
For those not technically inclined, try the adaptors on as many outlets as possible, while still appropriate for your needs. You will certainly see different results, depending on the combinations you have chosen.
Customer Rating: Summary: Good for some, but not for me... Comment: Pros: Super easy installation, no problems with getting connectivity between units.
Cons: Speed was only about 75% of 802.11g.
Like others have said, these would work great when wireless is not an option. In my case, however, I'll stick with WiFi for now.
Customer Rating: Summary: Does the Job Comment: I hooked the Panasonic BL-PA100KTA receiver up to my new home theater computer in the lower level of the house and the sender to my cable modem hub in the the upper level. The house was built in 1973 and has had several additions. The Panasonic BL-PA100KTA has worked fine for streaming movies from Netflix and several other sites.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great option to avoid wireless! Comment: This is a great product. I used this product to connect two offices. In the past, I had no way to share networked printers between offices, this kit was a "plug in and go" setup. This technology has a few advantages over the alternative, which would be to use wireless.
1. You can use a hub on each end and connect multiple devices in each location using just a pair of these.
2. When you boot your computer up, you don't have to wait for it to associate to your wireless router.
3. It works when wireless doesn't (through thick walls, etc).
Overall, it's been a great experience and I recommend them.
